Examples Of Duties
Under the direction of the Transportation Department Administrator, this position supervises staff and manages the day-to-day operations of Tacoma Public Schools (TPS) student transportation.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Provides general administrative assistance to the Transportation Department Administrator in the coordination and facilitation of a wide variety of assigned projects and designated areas of responsibilities in transportation operations.
2. Acts on behalf of the Transportation Department Administrator during their absence(s).
3. Supervises, disciplines, and evaluates assigned bus drivers and monitors; interviews and recommends applicants for hire; approves leaves and vacations; develops and clarifies procedures; sets expectations; resolves problems and/or grievances.
4. Maintains daily attendance logs for bus drivers; maintains records for vacation and leaves; validates the work hours for the bus drivers and bus monitors for each pay period.
5. Ensures that the department complies with state laws and codes and District policies and regulations; assists in preparing required state reports.
6. Collects, verifies, and computes payroll/timekeeping data per District guidelines and negotiated agreements; operates computer, with applicable software, to record payroll information; maintains accurate files and documentation.
7. Communicates with Human Resources department regarding payroll issues for department employees.
8. Ensures employees receives communication either in person and/or on the phone to verify time/duties performed and pay adjustments to be made.
9. Evaluates drivers’ daily bus reports; reviews drivers’ route discrepancies; counsels drivers.
10. Conducts regular safety meetings with bus drivers.
11. Coordinates staff efforts to ensure proper maintenance and appearance of the transportation fleet; oversees access to and security of the bus yard.
12. Performs as liaison between transportation staff, District staff, and community; responds to and resolves student discipline problems on the buses in coordination with building administration; ensures proper documentation is maintained and submitted.
13. Promotes a quality customer service environment.
OTHER JOB DUTIES
1. Attends workshops, seminars, and other personal/professional development programs; maintains current knowledge of trends and developments in effective transportation management and systems.
2. Serves as a member of a District negotiating team as assigned.
3. Performs related duties as assigned, on a temporary basis.
4. Regular, reliable, predictable attendance or physical presence is an essential job requirement and critical to the performance of the work.
CONDITIONS
Required to occasionally work outdoors in inclement weather; required to deal with, and defuse, if appropriate, difficult and sensitive situations and/or people; required to ride buses occasionally; may be required to work extended hours; may be required to drive a bus; may be required to lift and carry up to 20 pounds, bend, squat, stoop, kneel, crouch, walk, twist, climb, and/or be mobile.
Requirements
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in management, business administration, public administration, or related field and five years of increasingly responsible experience in the transportation field with an emphasis on student transportation operations; or any combination of experience and training which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and ability required to perform the work.
Licenses/Special Requirements
Valid Washington State driver’s license.
Possess or obtain valid CDL and Type I license within 60 days of employment.
Fingerprints and successful WSP and FBI background clearance/sexual misconduct clearance.
Allowable Substitution
Additional closely related experience may substitute on a year for year basis for up to two years of the required education.
