About the Role:
Portland Public Schools (PPS) is actively seeking an Assistant Director of Instruction & School Communities who is a proven leader, strategic thinker with a strong foundation and vision for instruction and curriculum development as well as the managing and monitoring of data to yield positive outcomes for students.
The Assistant Director of Instruction & School Communities to provide leadership to the Instruction and School Communities (ISC) division; develop, implement, monitor and evaluation operational and/or instructional vision and focused plans; manage operational support activities; advance the district goals for improving student achievement, increasing equity, improving access to quality programs for traditionally underserved populations and assuring all schools are safe, inclusive places that promote excellence for all students; provide strategic consultation to the Deputy Superintendent regarding all offices within ISC; anticipate and respond to emerging needs across the ISC division; serve as a communication liaison with external agencies including the Oregon Department of Education, PPS executive leaders, ISC leadership, building leaders, and operational departments.

Minimum Qualifications:
- A State of Oregon issued Administrative License is required at the time of appointment.
- A minimum of five (5) years as a licensed school professional including a minimum of three (3) years of experience as a PK-12 school-based administrator, Principal level preferred, with demonstrated results in improving the academic performance of students is required.
- Any other combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be considered.
Requirements
Representative Duties:
- Provide strategic consultation to the Deputy Superintendent regarding all functions in the ISC division; review baseline and progression data to identify and implement strategies for improvement; confer with a variety of stakeholders to identify implementation activities and regularly review process; ensure systems which monitor progress; regularly assess and refine strategies to meet division goals; respond to board inquiries, needs, and direction.
- Provide leadership, guidance, and consultation throughout the District’s strategic budget and staffing process; responsible for updating of the core program guide with input from key stakeholders; provide data and analysis regarding prior staffing process; recommend and lead the implementation of changes to the staffing model alongside other department leaders in ISC, Human Resources, Budget, and Research, Assessment and Accountability.
- Work with division leaders and staff, other district leaders and school administrators to lead communication of the division; align expectations and goals with ISC division goals, PPS Milestones, equity goals, Superintendent’s goals, and board goals.
- Oversee issues escalated to the ISC division for resolution; ensure responses are completed in a timely manner and reviewed by appropriate parties.
- Maintaining the pulse across the division, anticipate and respond to emerging needs, raising awareness to executive leadership as required.
- Direct, lead and oversee development, writing and submission of grant proposals; establish and maintain personal contact and relationships with grant contacts, conduct research on prospective grants, and maintain a calendar of submissions and other deadlines.
- Support division, school site administrators and staff by developing and deploying policies, procedures and professional development related to division goals.
- Serve as communication liaison between the ISC division and external stakeholders including the Oregon Department of Education responsible for ensuring assigned state, federal and other reports/programs are submitted timely and accurately such as Division 22.
- Oversee key division tasks, functions, and programs in order to ensure timely Board communication from ISC related topics, tightly connect with HR and labor relations for ISC related programs and initiatives, bridge communications within the division and throughout central office, district calendar, contracts going to the Board, pre-service planning, and more.
- Represent the district and division in meetings, workshops, conferences, committees, and professional activities.
- Demonstrate a commitment to the Portland Public Schools Racial Equity and Social Justice Commitment by developing a thorough knowledge and application of the district Racial Educational Equity Policy, the PPS RESJ Framework and Plan, and the PPS RESJ Partnerships Investment Strategy and other board policies; participate in staff development, in-services and trainings related to diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace and in K – 12 education; model appropriate behaviors; develop, recommend and implement improvements to educational practices with awareness and understanding of their impact in a racially and culturally diverse community.
